Comments Thread For: Pacquiao's Fitness Coach: Algieri Will Run After Big Hit

Justin Fortune, the strength and conditioning coach for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, respects their next opponent, Chris Algieri. He felt Algieri was the proper winner of the June split decision over Ruslan Provodnikov to capture the WBO junior welterweight championship.

Fortune expects Algieri (20-0, 8KOs) to show his courage in the fight with Pacquiao - until the Filipino champion lands his first big punch. Once than happens, Fortune says Algieri will get on his bicycle and run.

I hate a track meet for a boxing match. Will go out on a limb and say that if Pac can cut off the ring from this guy, it should go a long way in proving he can deal with Floydie's running.

That is probably correct, I would give it a couple rounds maybe three before Algeri is totally on his bike.

Hopefully since they expect this they are prepared to chase him down but given Manny's past issues chasing guys down I am not that optimistic. On the plus side I don't think Algeri is that good so Manny might just find a way to make short work of it so I don't have to sit through what could be a tedious affair.

Algieri is a mover anyways. He's a boxer-puncher, emphasis on the boxer part. What makes Pacquiao's camp think that his game plan isn't to run from the opening bell? Algieri knows that Pacquiao is still dangerous and won't be as easy to avoid as Provodnikov. I think the running will start before Pacquiao lands a big punch because Algieri wants to avoid that big punch! Maybe they should have a starting gun at the beginning of this match.
