The rise of the old Eastern Bloc at amateur level is a really interesting development in the sport.

Since those countries have started competing on their own at the Olympics, they've won the Val Barker trophy at every single tournament. Now you're seeing them become more and more prominent at the pro level as well.

It will be interesting to see where they're at 5-10 years down the road. Is there a very definite ceiling there or can these guys become the major force within the sport?

The amateurs are simply a measuring stick, they do not serve as a guarantee. Otherwise, every Val Barker trophy winner would kill it in the pros. How many have? Benvenuti and Roy Jones? Most don't even turn pro, for a reason.

What did Kovalev do in the amateurs? How about Hopkins?

Eastern Euros have pretty much taken over the big divisions and Mexico maintains its presence in the smaller divisions. And they each have a couple of guys on the other side of the fence too.

The US "slick" style is only working for a couple guys and the rest seem to be getting KTFO on a regular basis. It almost seems like a forgone conclusion at this point that every "slick" fighter not named Floyd gets catastrophically KO'd when he steps up the competition.

UK had a good run but I doubt the current crop will achieve what Calz, Froch, etc did. That and they don't seem to have a style, Haye/Groves fight completely different from Froch, etc.

America has 3 of the top 5 consensus pound for pound fighters in the world; Mayweather, Ward, Bradley.

Ward should be dropped from the ratings for inactivity and Bradley doesn't really have a "US style".

Hopkins is still on top for now though so it isn't only Floyd.

                    What is a UK style?

The only gym with a definitive style are the Ingles. Even then Brook is pretty orthodox.
