Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: We'll Never See Anything Like Hopkins Again

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says his business partner, IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32KOs), is a one of a kind fighter that boxing fans will never see again.

At 49-years-old, Hopkins is heading into the most dangerous fight of his career when he faces WBO champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23KOs) in an HBO televised unification on November 8th from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

We definitely won't. Well, not until humans start integrating ourselves with machines and we have cyborgs playing sports.

That's for sure. Dude is 50. Not 38, like Maywearher, not 44 like Foreman which is also extremely impressive. But 50!

At this point it's like beating a dead horse when talking about how great Bernard Hopkins...was. He's not what he used to be but at his age what he is doing is still special.

Bernard Hopkins must fight and defeat Andre Ward and he becomes the g.o.a.t.

True. Hopkins intelligence and ring craft are shared by a select few that have ever participated in the sport. His longevity shared by no one.

                Hopkins Legacy

Hopkins is a wonderful fighter. and will be remembered by boxing fans, but, because of his boring style, he'll be forgotten by the mainstream soon after he retires. It is the mainstream recognition that determines how great a fighter was. A number of fine champions, who were as boring as Hopkins, have been completely passed over by the mainstream: Pernell Whitaker, Shane Mosley, Roy Jones, to name a few.
