What is the worst refereeing you've seen in a fight??

Yeah that was a pretty rare thing to witness. But maybe that fight had the "Only the referee can stop the fight" ruling? Whereby despite corner intervention or advice from the doctor it is ultimately the referees decision? I dunno, but a ref blatantly disregarding a submission from the corner is a bad one.

that's just a rule about the doctor not being able to stop the fight. it's not the supposed to include the corner [chief second.]

the corner can stop the fight at any time. if mercante is really being an idiot, you can walk into the ring and get your guy dq'd.

you're supposed to find a commissioner, who is sitting next to your corner and observing, and that commissioner is supposed to enter the ring. anybody can throw a towel, and they can't always be seen. that's the idea behind the method of requesting a commissioner to stop the fight.

it's much, much quicker to find a towel, and throw it where the ref can see it.
