  • Walters p4p?

    Yes, I'm that guy.

Walters one upped Rigo against Donaire. I know what you are going to say (weight class, Rigo took his soul etc.). But the size difference wasn't that great in this fight, and Donaire didn't fight like his soul had been taken.

So if Rigo is top 5 P4P based solely on beating Donaire, shouldn't Walters be on the list, too?

Nonito was to many ranked between 3-5 at the time. Since then he was losing to Vic but landed a bomb then fights Walters. Nonito was also considerably bigger than Rigo. Rigo took Donaire's spot... Walters beat Donaire but Donaire has no more spot to have taken sooo... There you go.

Donaire just beat the guy who beat historically, THE MAN at featherweight. So, Donaire, in all honesty, was ranked as either number one or number two at 126lb. Nicholas Walters now occupies that position.

Donaire didn't look shop worn, however Walter's size and power was too much, I reckon if Donaire can get back to training as hard as possible, staying motivated, he can comfortably make superbantam or even bantam again and beat a tonne of top level fighters. I just don't see him holding up against the size and strength of guys like Walters and Gonzalez anymore. Possibly Mares.

In terms of Walters being P4P, those of you who have read my recent posts on the matter know I think it's a BS way of ranking fighters unles they pull of the spectacular and/or dominate a division. Looking at what's on offer at feather, I think he'd break what's left of Mares' heart but Loma v Wlaters is the fight I really want to see and there's no reason why both these bouts won't happen or shouldn't happen next year. Whoever come out on top of that little round robin deserves to be ranked on this mythical P4P crap.

        Not yet.

Rigo schooled Donaire over 12 one-sided rounds, to me his master class was more impressive.

Donaire was also significantly bigger than Rigo and ranked in the top 5 P4P. Last night Donaire was the smaller man, and has looked dreadful since being released from Rigo Day Care.

No, not at all. Rigo got the spot because of who Donaire was at that time. Walters did not beat the same guy.

Sorry, but that sounds very unconvincing.

            1) You don't take the spot of the guy you beat. Maidana wouldn't have been #1 if he had beaten Floyd. Algieri won't be #2/3 if he beats Manny. Gonzalez didn't become a P4Per by beating Mares. The list goes on and on.

            2) Neither do you have to beat a P4Per to become one. Andre Ward's best win is Froch, and Froch only became a P4Per after their fight. Roman Gonzalez has yet to beat a P4Per and he's on nearly everyone's P4P list. Again, the list goes on.

            3) As for who beat the "better Donaire"... That's up for discussion. One thing is for sure though: Donaire didn't look worse vs Walters than vs Rigo. If anything, he looked better.

Just to make it clear: I'm not actually arguing that Walters should be P4P. All I'm saying is that maybe we should reconsider Rigo' lofty ranking.

Donaire was the man, multiple weight world champion and many thought it was a fight that could go either way. Up steps Rigondeaux who makes a mockery of this great champion.

Rigondeaux is a top P4P fighter because he's probably the best damn boxer active. This is a bit of a silly question tbh, can't you see for yourself how special Rigondeaux is?

Yeah, he's "P4P" but I'm glad more people are thinking less of P4P these days as it really is a bad way to rank fighters. He's a good fighter, period.

Yeah, Rigo is special. And he should be P4P #2 actually. As many like to say, P4P is all fantasy, and Rigo is second only to Thurman in terms of fantasy wins.

You pretty much answered your own question... Before the Rigondeaux fight, Donaire was regarded by almost everyone as a top 5-10 P4P fighter and hadn't lost in twelve years. Rigo was (much) smaller than Donaire whereas Walters beat him at a higher weightclass and let's not act like Donaire looked good in his last two fights. Totally different circumstances.
