Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Trainer: We Need Rounds For The Big Fights

Abel Sanchez, trainer of IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs), would like to see an opponent extend him fighter into the championship rounds.

Sanchez sees the pros and the cons of Golovkin's power punching success, where most opponents are taken out in the first six rounds. But when Golovkin faces some of the more talented, especially in the higher weights, he will need the experience of being able to go twelve hard rounds.

Later tonight at the StubHub Center in Carson, Golovkin will face Marco Antonio Rubio.

Your big fight is brewing bruh. Just keep knocking these fools out. Canelo and/or Cotto are on-deck.

You're in a division with no stars. The only one was Martinez. He's a foregone 40-year old conclusion.

2015 you will be in a mega fight.

That's the third or fourth time I've heard either Abel or Golovkin himself make this point. Seems like they're expecting Rubio to be very durable.

Normally you hear the trainer and fighter promising the knockout. They're doing the opposite.

No rocket science here -- I repeatedly said that Golovkin is carrying his opponents because he needs rounds into the ring...

You're wrong. "Gennady Golovkin will get his 18th straight knockout on the 18th," said Sanchez, from his facility in Big Bear, Calif., where he and his fighter have been training since mid-August. "We're still in Big Bear. We won't be coming down until probably next week, like Tuesday or Wednesday...I think that it will take about three or four rounds for Gennady to figure him out but I don't think that the fight goes into the fifth round - or much into the fifth round - personally."

But Sanchez [as a coach] wants 12.

I'm hoping it goes past 6. I wouldn't mind see Gennady blast him out a bit later, just to show us some more of his arsenal, stamina etc.

I thought he was carrying Ouma. When he landed the hook right before the ref stopped it, dude blew his nose and slowly started to walk up

Many boxing fans would like to see a very competitive fight against Rubio since most of the previous fights of GGG have been lopsided victories. So far, only 3 guys were able to go the whole route but those 3 fights were 8 rounds being the last one on June 2008. Since GGG has been champion, only Kassim Ouma has been able to go 10 rounds (before losing by TKO) with the man of Kazahkstan. GGG is the true king of the MW division.

I rather see a knock out anyday. Yeah sometimes the fight sucks because it was short, but i rather see a ko than 12 boring rounds. The reason his popularity is his knock out streak.

I'm not certain Golovkin 'needs' rounds from a boxing perspective, he doesn't seem the type either to lose focus or to slack off in training. However, looking less than invincible would definitely help him get the biggest fights. Swings and roundabouts.

Also, is the undercard televised anywhere at all? I don't mean Donaire-Walters, I mean the sort of stuff that gets put on toprank.tv; anyone know?
