Comments Thread For: Povetkin's Promoter Says WBC Title Shot in The Goal

Former WBA 'regular' heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (27-1, 19 KOs) was recently removed from the WBA's rankings, but for the Russian boxer's camp that is not a problem. Povetkin had the opportunity to fight for the interim-WBA title against Luis Ortiz, but decided to fight for the WBC international championship with Manuel Charr, whom he knocked out in the seventh.

According to promoter Andrei Ryabinsky, their sole goal is to get a crack at the WBC belt. The title is currently held by Bermane Stiverne and he needs to face mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder.

Luis Ortiz likely would have beat him so they were smart to go the WBC routr instead.

Povetkin looked excellent against Manuel Charr. Charr is a pretty decent fighter at HW with some nice wins under his belt and Povetkin went through him like it was nothing.

That version of Povetkin gives anyone problems in that weight class. The WBC route is the easiest for him because I think he can easily beat Stiverne and Wilder.

Povetkin looked good against a bum like Charr.

But against Marco Huck he got his @ss handed to him and lucked out with two judges.

A rematch with Huck is needed.

Good news for boxing fans. Povetkin realizes his limitations and trying fight for one of Klitschko's titles isn't the most ideal route. With the WBC title in possession of Stiverne and maybe passing to Wilder, a lot of heavyweights seem to be going that route. Jennings fought in a WBC title eliminator earlier this year and is the mandatory opponent for the winner of Wilder-Stiverne. With Povetkin in the WBC mix I could a lot of good matchups and entertaining fights

Now that Huck has left Sauerland and is moving up to HW, Povetkin can start by showing us he can actually beat Huck instead of winning by robbery.

Povetkin is the only contender who actually intends on fighting other contenders to earn his shot. I respect that a lot.

I think Stiverne vs Povetkin is a 50/50 fight to say the least. I would slightly favour Stiverne even.

But it would be an awesome fight.

Charr was the better fighter at the time and probably still is.
