With my limited knowledge of Jamaican sports, I'd say track and field is by far the biggest thing over there, young men have the likes of Bolt and Powell to look up to and follow in their foot steps. Then there is the great cricketing heritage of the Caribbean, again so many heroes to look up to....who is there for the youth in terms of boxing? Just about no one.

    Edit:
I've heard that a lot of young athletic talent from Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean are being mined by the US for the NBA. So the resources are being squeezed. How many talented young athletes who have the options of T&F, Cricket and NBA are then going to turn their attention to boxing? Just not happening.

What about Jamaican culture doesn't lend itself to fostering a strong boxing culture compared to Cuba and Puerto Rico?
I was there on vacation in March and watched the Jamaican version of the Contender TV Show, I asked people there who the "Axe Man" was and almost everyone knew Walters. My tv at the resort had a sports station in Spanish that showed tons of boxing. There were some boxing gyms on the way to Negril as well.

Maybe with the success of Walters that will change that and inspire more Jamaicans to get into boxing
