Comments Thread For: Promoter: Rubio is Catching Golovkin at The Right Time!

Promoter Oswaldo Küchle feels confident that his boxer, WBC interim-middleweight champion Marco Antonio "Veneno" Rubio (59-6-1, 51KOs) of Mexico is catching IBO/WBA champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs) of Kazakhstan at the right time. Their fight takes place on October 18, in Carson, California.

Rubio has not been stopped since a ninth round TKO defeat to then middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in 2009. Since then, Rubio went 16-1, winning most of those bouts by knockout and losing a close twelve round decision to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2012.

This should be a fun fight. Rubio is Mexicano tough with a lot of power. I don't seem him as anything too impressive from his past bouts but apparently he does punch with a lot of force. It'll be interesting to see if he can take GGG's power and vice versa.

Momentum is an underestimated trait in boxing. When a fighter is riding high momentum, you'd be surprised what it can pull him through. If Rubio truly feels he's got so much in his favor coming off all those consecutive wins, he might give GGG more than we all think.

Rubio is gonna come out slow, he usually takes his time to see what's infront of him. I like Rubio, but he has to seize the moment - GGG does not play at all.

All these guys have to run their mouths because they know what's going to happen once the bell rings. They all say the same thing and get taken care of the same way.

And after this fight, he still will not have fought an elite fighter.

I see it going to the later rounds. Rubio is cagey and a tough veteran. He knows how to survive. He is probably the toughest guy Golovkin has fought to date. He might not be the most skilled, but sometimes the wily old smarts can carry a guy.

Aye... He ate what's his name - David Lemieux - he ate his power for the first half of the fight, and hwen he gassed out, jumped all over him, and took advantage of the height/length dynamic, and bombed him out with the straight right.

Now Golovkin is no Lemieux, but David has good technique, and hits damn hard...

The only time I remember Rubio being stopped is against a prime Pavlik in the 9th round, and that was on his feet I believe.

So I see Rubio making it into the second half of the fight, but probably getting stopped around the 8th-11th rounds. Unfortunately, I don't give Rubio much of a chance at all to win, though; I'd be surprised if he won more than one round.

Not sure what he means by "right time." He had stopped everyone of recent, that he has fought. I have a different definition of "right time."

I see it like this. If Rubio comes into the fight determined to survive 12, he will. I think at some point though, when time is starting to run out, he will make a stand. That will be when GGG gets him.
