How good would he had become, had he not taken the vassily jirov fight?? was it too much too soon despite the win??? would he have recovered from the brain bleed and continue his career down the line and become a world champion?
Anyone remember "Baby" Joe Mesi???

I remember him. He was a decent fighter who put on an entertaining show every time he got in the ring. He could beat all C-class and some B-class fighters. He would have been fun to watch, but I don't think he would have been able to beat the top 5 fighters in the division and become a household name if he had continued his career. -
He was a solid fighter. Decent power but a bit undersized and pudgy. Its a shame his career ended the way it did. No way could he beat a Klitschko, but wouldve been a solid opponent.Comment

most definately! he was certainly an action fighter who gave alot of excitement and good fights to alot of the top guys around the time he was still active.. but i agree he might not have been able to beat the top guys back them simply because he was undersized but maybe bird would of been an oppurtunity for a world title, who knows..I remember him. undersized and pudgy is a good way to describe him.. but he was around at a time where there were not alot of giants besides the klitchkos and lennox lewis, grant and golata wernt that good....there were fighters like ruiz, tua, byrd even holyfield amongst others who were pretty much the same size as mesi, the jirov fight really did a number on him so i would agree he would have been a solid contender.its a shame though how his career ended.Comment

He did a lot with what he had; he didn't start boxing until he we twenty years old, which is why he lost to some pretty mediocre guys in his amateur career. He wouldn't have gotten any better or won a title, but he was in some good scraps.Comment

i think byrd would of been beatable...do you think byrd would of outboxed him??? how about ruiz?Comment

I think byrd would have been too slick and quick for mesi but it would be competitive. I think hed have had a good chance with ruiz. hed have always struggled with the better punchers tho as his defensive skills and chin seemed suspect. I always liked mesi tho,,,he was fun to watch. damn shame his career was cut so short. hed have at least made some moneyComment
