Comments Thread For: Mares Says Departure From Hunter is Nothing Personal

Ever since last year's first round TKO defeat to Jhonny Gonzalez, former three division world champion Abner Mares (27-1-1, 14KOs) has been making changes within his team. He parted ways with longtime manager Frank Espinoza and retained Al Haymon in his place. Earlier this year he secured the services of Oakland trainer Virgil Hunter, who is best known for working with super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Nacho would be the best trainer for him but thats not gonna happen. He would fine tune his boxing skills.

Didn't Mares already train under Nacho before?

Isn't that why he had the experience sparring with Gonzalez before they fought?

Anyway that Hunter dude seams like a fraud to me anyway

just like when he was talking **** to Mayweather Sr. about him having faster hands and when Mayweather called him out Hunter b1tched out

I believe Mares trained under Nacho's guidance as a youth.

Virgil Hunter (and Floyd Sr) are the kind of trainers that need to build fighters from the ground up. They're extremely good at that. Whereas trainers like Freddie Roach are better at working with already established fighters.

Anybody can build fighters from the ground up. All trainers do that, but not all trainers get good talent coming in at an early age.
