  • Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Parts With Hunter, Back With Trainer Medina

Abner Mares plans to revisit his past in order to progress in the future.

The former three-division champ has announced his intentions to bring former longtime trainer Clemente Medina back into the fold, as he looks to reclaim past glory. Mares made changes in his career following a shocking 1st round knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez last August, including seeking the corner advice of Virgil Hunter, best known for his work with undefeated super middleweight king Andre Ward.

That's great news, Virgil was trying to turn him into something he's not.

Smart move by Abner. He didn't look anything like his self in his last fight. Hunter just isn't a good fit for a lot of fighters. Or in other words, he's overrated.

Fair enough. You can't question his heart though that's just idiotic. He's struggled in the playoffs but it's not due to him not having heart.

There's intangibles in critical moments that cannot be taught. Maybe it's not heart, but there's a certain "it" missing.

Mares should never have left Nacho. He'd be grooved in and mastering that style by now if he had kept with it.
