Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Promoter Discusses 2015 Options at 160

SANTA MONICA, California -- Gennady Golovkin makes his second appearance of the year on HBO when he faces Marco Antonio Rubio on Oct. 18.

The matchup isn't anything to get excited about, but GGG has become much-watch TV. The hope is once Golovkin gets past this fight, some of the bigger names at middleweight might be willing to face him in 2015.

As talented as Golovkin is, I'd like to seem him face a better live body in the realm of Jacob, Quillin or Andrade before saying he's the best Middleweight

Wel, yeah. Any of the three would be a nice addition, but if you don't think GGGs the best MW who do you think is?

Andrade's a JMW with only one good scalp (Vanes), Jacobs has beaten no-one of any significance (unless you want to count Ishe years ago) and Quillins best win by a margin is N'Dam N'Jikam in a fight where he lost nearly every round he didn't drop the guy in.

Despite not yet getting a signature win, Golovkin is actually head and shoulders above the MW pack simply by accumulating decent wins - sure it's not enough to prove he's elite, but it's better by a margin than anyone else at 160 (assuming, of course, he beats MAR).

It's been a long sludge for Golovkin, but 2015 might be his year to break out as a star. He's positioned himself to where he can take the rest of the division over whether they like it or not.

I guess it's more so that I think MW is wide open rather than calling HIM the best. Sergio WAS the best until Cotto beat him. Even though he was slowing down, he made claim to being the best over a period of time.

I am not sure I'd call Cotto THE best, but he is pretty much a lineal champ after Sergio.

I think Golovkin has the potential to beat everyone at MW, but then again only the ring will tell. I'd just like to see him vs a young talented fighter as opposed to another Macklin.

I like the guy, but feel that there is a fight or two at MW to really determine if he is the best or for Cotto to confirm he's the best.

Canelo-Golovkin is the fight that could save the middleweight division.

                  N'dam? Jacobs?

Man the team behind GGG need to be pushing for Canelo and Cotto, none of these small fires anymore. He's been feeding on them for a heck of a long time, admittedly N'dam is a very good fighter but GGG wants to reach the premier division and it's not through him.

I know there is talk of no one wanting to fight him but that's BS, if he brings enough money, they'll fight him, as simple as that.

Beating Rubio would make him the mandatory for Cotto's WBC title. That's likely the reason they made the fight.

That's down the line though, because Cotto is likely fighting Alvarez, so we're talking mid to late next year before Golovkin gets a chance at that belt. In the meantime, he'll keep fighting whatever middleweights he can get in the ring.
