  • Comments Thread For: Saunders-Korobov Back in Play For Vacant WBO Title

According to World Boxing Organization President Paco Varcacel, WBO 154-pound champion Dememtrius Andrade passed on the opportunity to face Matt Korobov for the vacant WBO middleweight crown, which Peter Quillin vacated several weeks ago.

After Quillin vacated, it was believed that Korbov (24-0, 14KOs) would face Billy Joe Saunders (20-0, 11KOs) for the WBO title. But then Andrade put in a request with the WBO, which they approved, to face Korobov for the belt.

That sucks. I was looking forward to Andrade-Korobov. Why put in a petition to fight for the belt if you don't intend on fighting for the belt?

Your sig - Jorge Paez was a beast! you had to be in top condition to fight him! Chris Eubank dropped the ball on this one, he talks shyt about Saunders, but does not commit to the fight, now Saunders has a shot at a world title - if he pulls off the unthinkable, he will be in the drivers seat, and he can shut Eubank down at every corner like (Hatton / Witter - Calzaghe / Froch - Khan / Brook - etc)

Sucks man. Quillin vacates and Boo Boo passed for a shot at a MW strap.

Korobov's no walkover to be sure but I would have given either of them a pretty solid chance at the Win, and both woulda made for decent and legitimate title fight.

I suppose Andrade may have legitimate reasons to continue campaigning at 154 and I ain't sure if the WBO allows you to be a 2 weight titlist. Possibly he wants to wait to see which way Cotto and Canelo will jump, but if anything I would have though that the 160 title would increase his options, and hell, even if he lost he'd still have his JMW strap.

BJS looks OK but really is almost totally unproven beyond the domestic level (not that Korobovs resume is actually earthshaking) - it doesn't really help the WBOs credibility to have these two guys fighting for a vacant strap, which might well explain why they offered it to Andrade over Saunders initially.

I never understood why they were trying to give Andrade the shot. Korobov and Saunders are the next in line.

Andrade just won his title at 154 and there are some big fights there for him if he bides his time.

So why in the world did Andrade's team push for this fight again... talk about wasting time.
