  • Comments Thread For: Omar Figueroa Claims Free Agent Status, Talks Future

As if the present situation between Golden Boy Promotions, Al Haymon and the fighters shared between the two wasn’t complicated enough, Omar Figueroa throws another wrinkle into the mix.

The unbeaten lightweight titlist was on hand at ringside the most recent edition of Golden Boy Live, which took place Monday evening in Hidalgo, Texas. Figueroa - from Weslaco, Texas - is being actively pursued by free swinging super lightweight Fidel Maldonando Jr., who scored an 8th round stoppage of a determined Nelson Lara in the evening’s televised co-feature.

His eyebrow area showed swelling and he said that the doctor has to go back in and correct the work. That's going to shelf him for a bit longer. He and Maldonado would be a war. Now that he is a free agent, I bet he has more influence to get his manager to agree with a move up to 140. That division is deep though. But he will bring even more excitement. He has some limitations, but not in heart and determination and pop.

they're going to need to match him soft at 140 to get him acclimated to the new weight class. He hasnt fought world beaters so i expect him to fight 135 pounders coming up to 140 to fight him.

His eye is gonna be an issue unless he has surgery to remove the scar tissue, similar to what gabe rosado had done.

When will these guys realize, that you are not a free agent if you are signed by Haymon. If anything you become more tied down.

I hope Figueroa fights Linares before moving on to 140.

Figueroa actually been going very well and he been rising quickly, he has to hold up his end and get better in the ring but I thought GBP been promoting him well

Promotional free agent. In this case, lets say just as an example, GBP was pushing to have him stay at 135, he wanted to move to 140, and Haymon wanted him to move to 140 or perhaps was neutral or goes with what Omar is comfortable doing, there is a more likelihood that he gets to move to 140. His manager will try to influence whoever promotes him and for a fight-by-fight, or a long-term contract, but Omar has the final say who he works with but yeah, like the Dylan song, you gotta serve somebody and in this case it is Hayman by contract.

Most of the time when a boxer declares himself a free agent, he usually isn't,, even if he is, he gets tied up in court...
