On March 23rd 2013 the WBC stripped Ward of the WBC super-middleweight title belt for being inactive for a long period of time, and for failing to face a mandatory challenger. They granted him champion emeritus status. Ward claimed a shoulder injury that required surgery was the reason for his inactivity, but the WBC claimed that Ward had not provided any medical evidence or even given them a rough availability date.

On May 20th, Ward relinquished the champion emeritus title, stating that he did not believe the WBC had the right to strip him of the world title because he was willing and able to defend it within the period specified by the WBC's rules.

He is WBA super champion at the moment.

Is this true? Did Ward not give them any evidence of his shoulder injury, or is this just the WBC being the WBC?

It seems like he has an infinity pass or something. 2 fights in like 3 years or something? He needs to retire and just get it over with, stick to commentating.

The WBA will let him keep their belt forever. Useless organisation.

He should already be stripped or be a man and give it up, he knew he had no plans on fighting already and now with more legal problems he sure as hell wont be fighting any time soon but for some reason he still has the damn belt.

Im just tired of these guys that get their hands on a belt and don't defend it at least twice a year, they have a responsibility as champions to defend the belt and not hold it hostage just so they can still brag and claim to be a champion while not fighting..

Ward is wasting his career and everybody else's time while he's at it.

They should, but they're not going to do so unless it's stipulated by whatever alphabet company issues the belt. And they're not going to make those demands because they're all competing with each other.

Anyone who tries to improve anything in boxing will be undercut by someone who sees a buck in it.

No kidding. And he's turned down several fights too. Sure, they weren't huge fights but at least he would have been active and stayed relevant, and he would have been paid decently too. The man's got the Winky Wright syndrome.
