The state of boxing is this. It is dying. We have Mayweather who puts people to sleep for 70 dollar pay per views. The NFL, NBA and MLB have their major and minor shows on cable networks that showcase the talent, making them recognizable. Most people know who Mayweather is, but what about the rest?
The heavyweight champion is unknown to most Americans. And I know what you're thinking. It's a global sport.
Then why does the big fish always have to e an English-speaking trash talking American? If it's such a global sport, why is the highest paid boxer an American?
Because Americans have always dominated boxing.
Then, if we have do we now?
Walk down the street and ask people who Miguel Cotto is or Manny Pacquioa or Amir Khan?
I already did. All people knew was Mayweather.
However, when he retires, what then?
This sport has shot itself in the foot year after year with bs ways to try to get people to PAY to see it's biggest events when the other top sports have worked freely without those restrictions.
If it's such a global sport, get ready. It's about to be a dead sport in this country.
When was the last time you walked by a boxing gym in America? It does not happen much anymore. In the years to come, once Mayweather is done, it's all over. The other international fighters will do well in their markets but football and basketball and baseball will take over here.
This is the end, folks. And it is a sad one that it is Mayweather to end it. He has decent boxing skills, but he is not the type of fighter to sell out arenas. This sport has become nothing more than a circus and it's long past the days of guys who would fight in a phone booth or even fight inside at all.
For the past forty years, we have praised guys like Ali, Roy Jones and Mayweather who have whittled the sport down to running and dodging instead of fighting. And for all of you who love them, cherish this time. It is short and the sport is about over in this country. Thank you for setting the pattern of boring fights that run everyone off.
Thank you to the promoters and announcers who promoted these clowns to destroy the sport. The Duran-Leonard rematch was the beginning of the end. Diran only quit because he knew it was not a boxing match. If this were a real sport, he would have been praised. But the majority only scolded him year after year and since then, boxing has not enjoyed popularity the way it once did and now it's down to a nub.
Go ahead and argue but the most popular sport in the world at one time is about to be done. And all those who helped destroy it can be thankful. You succeeded.
It's over.
