Comments Thread For: Abraham-Smith: Robert Byrd To Officiate 168 Lb. Title Fight

Veteran referee Robert Byrd has been named third man for the super middleweight title fight between Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) announced Tuesday morning.

The bout takes place this Saturday in Kiel, Germany. Abraham attempts the second defense of his second tour as a super middleweight titlist; Smith contends for a major title for the first time in his career.

Along with the appointment of Byrd, neutral officials have also been selected to score the bout from ringside. The three judges assigned to Saturday’s title fight are: Waleska Roldan from the United States; Fernando Lugana, from Spain; and Zoltan Enyedi, from Hungary.

Byrd’s lone experience with either fighter came in 2006, when he officiated Abraham in a middleweight title defense versus Kofi Jantuah.

Enyedi has worked three previous bouts ringside with Abraham in the ring. The most recent came in Dec. ’12, serving as one of the three judges for Abraham’s 8th round knockout of Medhi Bouadaia in the first defense of the same title he has since lost and regained.

Roldan and Laguna are working their first fight that involves Abraham. None of the four appointed officials have ever been assigned to any of Smith’s previous fights. [Click Here To Read More]
