Did fighters from the past use smaller gloves than Modern fighters

This article shows that the Gloves jack Dempsey used to destroy Jessie Willard was only 5 oz. Todays heavyweights use 10 oz gloves and there are either Orthopedic foam gloves or punchers gloves.

If this information is true, in addition to 15 round fights or more then Fighters of the past era are much tougher in comparison to modern fighters than i initially imagined.
