How well would Canelo vs Cotto sell if...

They added the Abner Mares vs Leo Santa Cruz fight on the undercard? Granted all parties must continue winning their upcoming fights and come to an agreement but with Arum and Oscar already in talks about the Canelo vs Cotto fight, I am very optimistic about the fight coming into fruition.

Now, we know Mayweather favors Cinco de Mayo weekend heavily and would most likely never succumb to Canelo's demand for the date. However, having a fight in the magnitude of Abner Mares vs LSC could easily sway viewers to the Cotto vs Canelo card quite easily, especially the Mexican audience due to the celebrations going on that particular weekend.

Here's the thing that had me thinking quite a bit. Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz are now managed by Al Haymon, whom is more than happy to stock Mayweather with a lopsided undercard. However, if he was able to persuade Kid Chocolate to back off of a career high payday very few fighters get to see in there careers, how much power will he have over Mares and Leo? Will Al be able to pull this fight away from Oscar and steer it towards Floyd in order to garner more potential buys?

Here's another thing, Mayweather stated he had a surprise for his fans this coming May. However, after the Maidana rematch he has yet to indicate anything special occurring on the mentioned date. So there seems to be alo't going on behind the scenes and the public is pretty much left out in the dark, for now.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao seems even further now that Floyd said the only way they would shoot it out was if Pacquiao fought under the TMT banner, lol. So other than the Pacquiao fight, what other fight would be massive enough to beat a Canelo vs Cotto showdown on the May date? Would LSC vs Mares be a decisive factor on who comes out on top in regards to PPV sells if indeed Canelo vs Cotto clashes head to head with Floyd vs ??? in May? Will Oscar and Canelo be forced to push back their planned date or will they remain adamant and collide with Floyd?

    Looking forward to your replies.

Canelo vs. Cotto is the biggest fight boxing can make right now.

Money talks. I'm sure both Mares and Leo would gladly pack up their tents and head wherever the money points to, whether that be Vegas or New York. Problem is, which card would they fall under. Will Haymon steer them onto the Floyd uncercard or will Oscar position them as the co main event for Canelo vs Cotto?

Canelo vs. Cotto + Mares vs. Santa Cruz would draw HUGE numbers. I doubt it happens though. Al Haymon would never help GBP and Canelo in la reconquista of the May and September dates, so I wouldn't expect to see any Haymon managed fighters on a Canelo vs. Cotto card, .

I'd expect non-Haymon managed guys like Mauricio Herrera, Francisco Vargas, Frankie Gomez, Jorge Linares, Antonio Orozco, and Humberto Soto to be featured on a Canelo vs. Cotto card. They're all guys that make for exciting fights, but at the fraction of the cost of a Haymon fighter.

As of now it looks like Canelo and Cotto are going to punk Mayweather for the May date, which should be great for boxing, .

The only fight bigger is still Pacquiao v Mayweather. It's not really a relevant fight anymore but you have to consider they are both big names amongst people who don't really follow the sport and once they see they are facing each other, the right marketing spoon-fed to the casuals and non-followers, mixed with boxing fans curiosity (lets be honest, we'd all watch it) it still still be a huge fight in that respect, there is still huge PPV sales and money to be made.

Canelo v Cotto is the next biggest due to their respective fan bases in their countries and amongst boxing fans. But it's not going to crossover into the mainstream and to people who don't really follow the sport. For us on here it might be a more relevant fight though.

If Mayweather wants to fight in May, the only way he's gonna sell against this is to fight Pacquiao.

The bolded is exactly what I was thinking. It's ridiculous to me how much say Al has over his fighters. If anything Abner is fighting under the GBP banner(not sure about Leo but I'm quite positive he is too), shouldn't they grow some balls and decide which card to fight under? If Canelo doesn't beat Floyd in a head to head collision I'm sure he dents his numbers significantly, to the point where Floyd would hit an all time low in PPV sells.

Canelo and Cotto are massive stars in the spanish speaking community, like I said in my reply to Vagabond, if Canelo doesn't beat Floyd head to head, I'm sure he will make a massive dent in his numbers. Floyd vs Pacquiao would be the only fight that would force GBP and Canelo's hand to push their date back, seeing as how no current fight could compete with such a massive showdown.
