  • Comments Thread For: Narvaez Closing in on Chavez With Latest Defense

by Cliff Rold - Now an impressive 28-1-1 in major title fights, 39-year old WBO Jr. Flyweight titlist Omar Narvaez (43-1-2, 23 KO) of Trelew, Chubut, Argentina, took another step towards catching the great Julio Cesar Chavez’s record of 31 wins in title contests with a majority decision over 28-year old Felipe Orucuta (29-3, 24 KO) of Nicolas Romero, Mexico, on Friday night at the Anfiteatro Municipa in Villa Maria, Cordoba, Argentina.

The bout was a rematch of a May 2013 contest that was hotly debated amongst those who saw it. Narvaez removed cause for debate this time around, surging in the final two rounds to insure his title. Both men weighed in below the division limit of 115 lbs. at 114 ˝. The referee was Celestino Ruiz.

Starting much like their first fight, the 5’7 Orucuta used his four-inch height advantage to establish his long left jab. Narvaez did little to get inside. An Orucuta right to the body late in the frame may have been the best punch of an uneventful round. Narvaez, ever defensively sound, wasn’t touched clean with much. [Click Here To Read More]

Narvaez vs cuadras would be a hell of a unification fight.. powers that be, please make it happen.

doubt a bout w/CC happens...he's got a fight coming up then he goes vs Concepcion, the earliest he'd b available 4 a unification is next June/July & I doubt the Kuchle brothers would put him in vs an old, but still slick Narvaez...

I think the most telling stat about Narvaez is even though he is 28-1-1 in title fights, he's only 4-1 vs. current/former world champions.

I am not even sure if it is that many since checking Narvaez record only see ex-champs Lazarte and Tamara (who by the way I believe won a title but had zero defenses). I hope somebody else has more/better information but I am sure Narvaez only has faced one elite fighter being Donaire (the rest were modest contenders and most of the fights were in Argentina and at least 2 controversial decisions such as the first fight with Orucuta).

He's faced 5 (Adonis Rivas UD12; Luis Lazarte DQ10; Brahim Asloum UD12; Carlos Tamara UD12; Nonito Donaire L12)

A while back I used archive.org to look up where some of Narvaez opponents were ranked at in ring magazine a week before Narvaez fought them.

              I only found two:
              -Brahim Asloum #5
              -Cesar Seda #8

Rings' online presence only goes back to 2005, but for the years before that just going by ring's yearly ratings on boxrec's wiki, none of the Narvaez' 2000-2004 opponents were on it.

EDIT: For this rematch, Orucuta was ranked #8 in ring and #6 in TBRB.

Even if he breaks the great Julio Cesar chavez record and retires as champion narvaez is not going to no hall of fame. All of narvaez title defenses have come against c & d level fighters and when he decided to step it up he was running from nonito all night.this guys a joke.

Inom and Whitfield were also rated. He's faced some scrubs, but there were some good challengers.

They were probably rated in the ABC rankings, but not in the Ring rankings.

Here's the ring rankings for November 22, 2005. Narvaez fought Inom on December 5

Here's the ring rankings for February 1, 2009. Narvaez fought Whitfield in February 7.

I have no idea who those guys are really. Maybe they deserved to be rated in ring, but they weren't for whatever reason.
