It is because of his name (Khan) and that he has had multiple visits to Pakistan.

Bit silly because they clearly don't know who he is.

My mate got denied a visa for America once because of his name. His name is really English but sounded like someone who was on some sort of list for ********* activities.

You may be right I suppose given his name and heritage - the US Customs are likely to be very cautious indeed around 9/11.
