Whilst all this arguing over technicalities is going on, the issue here is this:

Mayweather is allowed to defend his 154 title against an opponent who is not ranked within the top 15 of his division AND has never even fought within the division. Had Maidana been ranked, the weight wouldn't be an issue as it would be still legitimate for his 154 belt.

This has arised because the WBC have a rule to this effect: the President, with support from the (selected) championship commission, has the ability to transcend any rules within the WBC.

Even the WBA didn't want anything to do with this one.

These catchweight title fights pretty much started with big money star Leonard when he won the 175 pound title at a top weight of 168. Before then if you wanted a man's title you fought him at his weight period. I thought it was wrong when Leonard did it and EVERY catchweight title fight is wrong including when my favorite fighters like Pacquiao do it. Anyway Maidana vs Mayweather is for both the 154 pound title and the 147 pound title and it doesn't matter if I like it or not. I hope Maidana knocks him out.
Mayweather would be the lineal World Jr Middleweight Champion even if Maidana somehow wins

I agree with your position on cw title fights and have said it numerous times on NSB.

Leonard and lalonde is a different situation. They fought for the 175 lb vacant title at 168. Floyd won the jww title at 154.

I also have said I agree in principle with your point about fairness. The only thing I said you were wrong about is the weight. You are saying because the max weight for the fight is 147 that floyd shouldn't be allowed to defend the jmw belt.

It's fine that you want floyd to get ko'd. It wasn't personal and you shouldn't take it that way.

Isn't that what odh did when he fought floyd?

Or is it different if the opponent is a titleholder in the weight class below?

Well titleholders from the same organisation can often move up to challenge the one higher, which is exactly what Andrade is doing.

But the WBC is hopelessly corrupt. They are only doing this to bypass Floyd's WBC mandatory. Floyd wasn't Oscar's mandatory at the time

Try earlier: Harry Greb and Sugar Ray Robinson.

(I started this thread because the 147lb Mayweather presumably gets the opportunity to win the lineal 160lb belt after fighting Cotto... That's all.)

Cotto has lots of cards in his hand...
You have to realize Floyd can only take a fight that's offered to him, or that the other fighter is willing to fight. Floyd has initiated negotiations twice, and he was rejected both times.

I believe if Mayweather does not go after Cotto, then he will surely fight either Khan or Brook. Their fans travel well, and will also buy the PPV. Not to mention if he fights Brook it will be to unify the titles.

                    1. Floyd has never expressed any interest in a cotto rematch.

                    2. Miguel is currently working with bob arum and hbo.

Its not going to happen. It baffles me that u guys keep talking about it smh
