Sorry I'm late, only just got back from Manchester.
Well! What a fight. All I can say is that Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan, Alex Arthur, Nicky Cook, Scott Harrison and David Haye are proving that British fighters can be and are a real force on the world stage. Joe's performance was absolutey legendary, in a fight that few really expected him to win. Everyone on these forums was saying that he wouldnt last two, three, four rounds etc, and he absolutely dominated from start to finish. He made Lacy look poor - very poor. His quick hands and nimble footwork along with his incredibly fast hands and decent power made him the perfect fighting machine last night. It was an incredible performance, one that deserves to (and will) go down in the history books. There can be NO excuses. Lacy did not have one moment's success in the entire fight. Calzaghe dominated from opening to closing bell. He has proven beyond all doubt that he is a top ten p4p fighter, and he will only go forward from here. He'll move up to light heavy and have even more success once he won't have to kill himself to make the weight.
The fight reminded me of Floyd Mayweather vs Arturo Gatti. The only difference here was that Lacy's corner didnt have the humanity that Gatti's corner showed in pulling him out. Lacy couldnt hit Calzaghe for love nor money, and was getting hit with fast, powerful combinations all the time. Joe Calzaghe will now go down in history as a great champion, not merely a good one.
And he's both British and Welsh - it is possible to be both, just as it is possible to be both an American and a New Yorker. Just thought I'd clear that one up for our friends across the pond.
