On August 30, WBO World Champion ‘’Captain’’ Marco Huck (37-2-1, 26 KOs) will attempt to equal Johnny Nelson’s record for the most title defenses in the cruiserweight division when he faces Mirko Larghetti (21-0, 13 KOs) at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle/Westphalia, Germany.

As Huck edges closer to Nelson’s record of thirteen defenses we take a look at how the cruiserweight’s compare.

A gangly southpaw, Nelson’s awkward style made him a nightmare opponent for many of his cruiserweight contemporaries. Despite losing his first three professional contests the boxer from Sheffield went on to establish himself as one of Britain’s all-time cruiserweight greats. Nelson retired in 2005, having won 45 of his 59 bouts including 29 inside the distance, ending a seven-year reign as WBO Champion.

Has Marco Huck ever fought in the US? he has a good story, lots of defenses, but I just can't take him serious - he lost to Steve USS Cunningham and I think that was his last defeat, but dam he just stays over in Germany and gets gift decisions, most are earned but a lot of them are presents... can't take him serious...tho

Theres no major cruiser fights in the US. All in Europe

He's never fought more than a two hour drive from home, but he's made good money in Germany, even when "defending" his "title" against HOF opponents like Swamp Donkey Richards, Brian Minto, Ran Nakash, Rogelio Omar Rossi and a shot Hugo Garay. The number of title defenses is an utterly worthless stat when any "champion" can avoid unification matches and beat up nobodies under the guise of "defending a title."

You just made a fool of yourself, USS traveled to Germany (because that's where the cruisers fight) before he moved to heavyweight. Hernandez is a germany based cuban cruiser, there must be a reason.

Huck was green when he lost to Cunningham, but he should've lost to or atleast had draws with Lebedev and Arslan in the first fight. The trilogy with Afolabi was scored perfectly and he got a raw deal in the Povetkin fight as he should've won it but the scores went to Povetkin. All-in-all, things evened themselves out. And as mentioned, the US CW scene is nonexistent, it'd be a step down.

True, but he used to be the most active champ in the sport, fighting like every 3 months. And has also fought a bunch of top opponents, with mixed results as the poster above notes.

When Nelson held the title the WBO ment even less then than it does now. I can't remember him ever attempting to unify.
