What exactly is the concept of a 'purse bid'?

As a 3-year-or-so boxing fan this is one thing I still am not clear on. When they announced the Danny Garcia-Postol purse bid and Wilder-Stiverne bid would be on the 12th, I naturally thought that would be the day the day they are fighting. I know now that they are not, but I might as well ask. What does a purse bid mean?

If an agreement with the promoters of each fighter can't be made a purse bid is when promoters bid for the right to promote the fight mandated by the organizing body which in this case is the WBC.

So they bid for the right to promote the fight....I'm still not 100% clear on that.

So let's say for example if Oscar is promoting somebody and he wins the bid against another promoter then we can only hear him (Oscar) try to sell the fight like on TV and stuff? Lol, I am confused.

They auction of Pac shakes with PEDS , and they're "shaken" by Pacquiao himself prior to shipment, This way the fighter thats being promoted has a chance of scoring a KO similar to that of Hattons while not taking drug test.

I think Donaire won the purse bid against Montiel too.

Why would I be mad? I'm not even that big of a Marquez fan. He's shot to ****. I did enjoy him 5-7 years ago though, when he was in his prime.

When a belt organization orders a mandatory fight, they order a free negotiation period, a purse bid date, and a specific time period for the fight to take place. If regular free negotiations fail, then it goes to purse bid. On the purse bid date, any promoter, including a promoter not associated with either fighter, can submit a bid. This is a one time bid. You can't increase or decrease the bid after you submit it. The highest bidder wins the right to promote the fight. The actual bid amount is only the amount that goes to pay the fighters. Any other money made from the fight outside that bid amount goes the the promoter's pocket. The purse split is actually determined by the belt org. It's usually 75% for the champion and 25% for the challenger. The winning promoter determines almost everything else. The location, venue, network, date (within the specified time period), and whatever else is solely determined by the winning bidder.
