How did james toney get so out of shape?

I keep wondering how toney got out of shape in what seemed like a short space of time. He used to be in pretty decent shape early on in his career.

Did he just stop doing roadwork? I've seen videos of him doing strength and conditioning and the guy seems pretty strong even now.

The only thing I can think of is that his style never required him to be athletic so he just did whatever he liked. Even though he sparred hundreds of rounds and fought often his style doesn't require incredible athleticism.

Steve Collins said he saw Toney slurping on a supersized coke whilst he was training in the gym. Thats prob not good for the waist size. (does that not give you cramp as well?)

JT always had weight issues. Even all the way back to the RJJ fight he complained how he was so drained to make the weight limit and thats why he was "supposedly" sluggish against RJJ. (I think RJJ was just that damn good back then)

Somebody who trained at JT's gym said he doesn't do any road work anymore as he kept going up in weight class. All he does is spar like beast.

He loves to eat lots of rich food and does not have the will power to eat less. He used to be able to control his eating when he was much younger but he has an eating disorder he can't control and he will probably be a very fat man until the day he dies. He had so much talent that he was able to do well as a grossly overweight heavyweight but his proper fighting weight has never been more than 175. Even when he fought at 200 pounds he still had rolls of fat.

James grew up in a bakery that his mom owned and he developed an eating disorder.

The thing is, and I don't want to cause offence, I can't even fathom the portions that Americans eat. I only just thought about it but maybe that also has something to do with it as well as his eating disorder.

I mean looking back I must have looked pretty strange when I visited America for a week. They must have wondered why I was eating such small portions. The poster above mentioned an extra large soda. In the uk ( even though we can be pretty unhealthy) that could be shared among six people! When people say toney ate a lot I keep forgetting the portion sizes he would have had.....

How did any trainer tolerate him now that I think about it? I like toney, he 's talented and can be funny at times. But he was known to be abusive and never seemed to listen to his trainers.
