It was a back injury and I don't think he's retired. There was an article on here sbout this time last year where he says he plans to continue to fight and is making a comeback

It's ironic that Pirog KO'd Danny Jacobs years ago to win a title and was considered a top MW. Now Jacobs is a titlist and one of the top dawgs and Pirog is no where to be found

The last I read he basically was saying he's going to give it one last go, remaining optimistic but at the same time being real that if he injures himself again its over.

Yeah... hard to say. Been out now for over 18 months due to a back injury due to the tried and tested 'hit a tractor tyre with a sledgehammer' training technique.

There were reports of a possible return in late 2013, and again this year, but nothing of substance has materialised, despite him fairly frequently passing his views as a pundit in Russian boxing media.

There have been rumours that he has financial interests outside of the sport, and doesn't really need to return to the ring, but nothing I can substantiate.

The guy's about 33 now and TBH I would be surprised if he makes any return of significance after what? a 2 year lay off, but you are right, it would be nice to have another good talent in the division. Fortunately there is one or two promising up and comers.
