  • In your opinion what is the state of Boxing?

I have been a boxing fan since around 2004 and I feel like the sport is much healthier today than it was back then. I feel like the increased competition from Showtime trying to be the leader in elite level boxing and mega fights against HBO has really provided great content and match ups for Boxing. One trend that is really hurting the sport recently especially in 2014 is way too many pay per views. I feel like there is an enormous amount of young talent coming up in Boxing with prospects/young champions as I will rattle off a lot of names of young fighters I see a lot of potential in. Julian Williams, Anthony Joshua, Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Felix Verdejo, Canelo Alvarez, Jose Benavidez, Frankie Gomez, Terence Crawford, Mikey Garcia, Vasyl Lomachenko, Danny Garcia, Kell Brook, Callum Smith, Deontay Wilder, Carl Frampton, Leo Santa Cruz and Oscar Valdez.
These are young fighters that I feel will be all over everyone's pound for pound list in years to come. I also feel like Boxing is leaving America more and feel like the talent is coming from Latin America, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. While I think Boxing is a little stagnant in America I feel like Boxing on a Global level has had great success in the past decade. I will end with I am very excited for the young crop of talent in Boxing and see a lot of great fights for the future of the sport. My question is to you where do you see Boxing at the moment and where in the future?

I agree Garcia-Salka was really poor matchmaking. I think fights like Canelo-Lara and Porter-Brook are occurring a lot more now a days though. A fight I was really interested in was Froch-Groves 2 because knew that fight could go either way.

It goes up and down, every 5 years. When Mayweather and Pacquaio retire, it'll be a big blow to the PPV numbers, but new stars will replace them. Boxing will never die. So I voted stagnent. But I'll actually say it's growing a bit at the mment, just slowly.

I'd say transitional. Floyd, Manny, wlad, cotto, SHane, Bhop and JMM are nearing the end. That is 7 sure fire 1st ballot HOF'ers. Also, with Floyd and pac leaving, it seems the PPV era is transitioning to someone else as well. Either Canelo, Chavez or MAYBE (and its a huge stretch) Broner will likely become the next PPV star. GGG, Loma, Crawford, Thurman a ton of younger guys will be in the mix too.

There is also the GBP stuff settling itself out. I think once that suit is settled we will get better fights,

Boxing is fine. Tons of young talented guys at 126. Garcia and Crawford at 130-135. Broner, garcia, matthyese, etc at 140. 147 is loaded. 154 has a bunch of good fighters. GGG is a rising star. Kovalev, Stevenson, and BHOP at 175. If wilder turns out to be the real deal we will have a great American heavyweight again as well.
We just need the guys to fight each other on a regular basis. Last year was pretty great, loaded with competitive matchups. 2014 so far has seemed like the AL Haymon showcase organization. Bunch of names fighting low level guys lately. Next week we have a good competitive (maybe) match up with Brook and Porter.
These promoters and networks need to hash out the problems and make fights.

And, PPV is absolutely ruining the sport. We had like 4 months straight with one. That is ridiculous. If we have to pay for any perceived good match up then the casual fan will just pass and watch it for free the next week. Something like Canelo VA Kirkland should be on showtime. Same with Cotto Vs anyone but Floyd, GGG, or Canelo. Not to mention Manny next fight!! But he's an established star and PPV fighter at least I guess. Still sucks though.

2013 was epic, 2014 is dire.

2014 has been boxing's worst year for as long as i can remember.

Why are no good matchups getting made this year?
