what era is benard Hopkins? roy jones was basically undefeated in his prime and spanked benard in the 90's, so he cant be the best from that era. mayweather has beaten more world champions than any fighter in the history of the sport. and pacquiao has won titles in more weight classes than any fighter in the history of the sport. so Hopkins isn't the best of this era.
Hopkins is elite, but his biggest wins are against Oscar, tito, winky. Oscar best weight was 147. he fought b hop at 160. tito best weight was 147. he fought b hop at 160. winky best weight was 154. he fought b hop at 170. pavlik best weight 160. he fought b hop at 170. so tarver and pascal are really his most legit wins, and neither one of those guys are all time.
Hopkins is from the previous era and still happens to be competing at an elite level. Chad Dawson beat him twice, meaning, he's not on Floyd or Pac's level.
He's probably around Wlad's level, which is still amazing seeing as how the dude is 50 years old. Simply amazing.

This was a good post.
IMO, taking a page from Stephen Edwards, if Bernard is going to 'lose' some sort of Best of (really 2) Eras contest it would be the Eyeball Test: If you watch 10 seconds of Prime Floyd, Prime Roy, Prime Manny and Prime Bernard- Bernard's 10 seconds would place fourth. That's including 'skill' or 'brains' or whatever. I think the Eyeball Test is important; it's why everyone acknowledges that Tyson is one of the ATGs- He is just so obviously incredible to watch moment to moment(when he was young). The Eyeball Test is good because some fights that seem to have ranked certain fighters forever in the public's collective minds might have been slightly marred because of some strangeness or unfairness in the fight that some people note and some others dismiss. I've always felt that Evander held too much in his bouts with Tyson. So THAT fight shouldn't be the only decider in ranking those two fighters. Toney was weight drained against Roy so... same thing.
I mean, Bernard should probably be everyone's freaking favorite fighter after his long, incredible journey. He's MY favorite fighter. He admitted himself that he loves Ward and Gatti but he couldn't have been that kind of fighter and had the varied, amazing career he's had.
That all being said, if he beats Kovalev and Golovkin that would be more badass than being the best fighter of this era or that era. Isn't that what boxing's all about?
I dunno, what his era? Is it the 90s to early 00s? Then known, because Chavez Sr, Whitaker were still active in that time so an argument can be made for them although imo Chavez's best years were in the 80s. Then there were the new guys of the 90s, RJJ, Oscar and Tito, Oscar had the best resume of the lot and was the better all round boxer/puncher but RJJ had the greater athletic gifts. Hopkins was a top 5 no doubt though in that time frame.
If you count his era as early 00s to present day then yes, a very good argument can be made for him, with Pacquiao a close second if not first. Floyd and Wlad round off the top 4.
Hopkins best of this era just no. He can scream about his old age and all that crap that he is playing people with but hell no he is not the best of this era.
So black fighters are duckers in your opinion but you can't say that because you don't want to get banned.
Cool story.
