According to Steve Kim via Next Round podcast, there's some truth to the rumor that Clottey is a possible opponent for for Canelo. Kirkland might be too risky to to jeopardize the Cotto fight.

I really hope this is true because Clottey is going to humiliate Canelo.

Clottey is just as dangerous as Kirkland IMO; Kirkland has been KOd by a journeyman and nearly lost to Carlos Molina. He's very vulnerable, and Canelo will almost certainly drop and eventually KO him if Kirkland doesn't rush in with the early KO.

Clottey is a little bit more of a question mark. Not easily hurt, good defense, can hit, can box... not knowing what Clottey would turn up would make me worrisome if I was Canelos manager.
