Cotto fights (and beats) GGG at middleweight and every loss on his record evaporates.
Hope it happens in this life time, and then there's reality.Comment

Roach is so full of ****
He knows Golovkin very well from the time he abused poor Chavez Jr in a sparring session in the wild card gym.
But yeah, ok. He's playing hard to catch.Comment

Cotto has been a pleasant surprise vs Mayweather & Martinez...........Trout was a bad matchup from the start. I'm glad Cotto got to Martinez first and can ride that win to a first ballot HOF seat.
I don't agree that Cotto is half the size of Golovkin as someone mentioned, but he is small for a modern MW, particularly his short reach would be a major hurdle.
Golovkin puts on serious mental pressure. Cotto would eventually start breaking down, his face wouldn't hold up........even if he were to get GGG's respect, he would break down in a similar way as he did in the first Margarito fight. Difference is GGG doesn't need the loaded gloves or chin of steele.......Cotto would have to dig to the body earlier.......but Golovkin is even more brutal to the body at the weight than Cotto. Most of his KO's are set up by body shots.
He is also defensively under-rated as guys like Duran were. He does use subtle movement to avoid or limit the damage of incoming, but he can also take a good shot like Duran could and is willing to do so to get his in. Nobody has been able to dissuade him yet and it won't start with Geale and wouldn't with Cotto. (Before anyone get's upset, I'm Not saying he's on Duran's level...just that he uses defense in a subtle way....I could use Benitez as another example of under-rated, subtle defense.)
I would love to see Cotto beat him. But he wouldn't. Let's not be delusional. I don't think that fight happens. If I'm Cotto, I try for Canelo and if I win, which he should, go for another crack at Floyd by luring him to 155 for the MW title..........I don't think he wins that fight but that's the best retirement plan.........those two fights and walk........he won't sustain damage like vs Margarito and Pac that he really didn't recover from for 2-3 years.
Plus.......he's an old 34 in terms of wars. I respect the hell out of Cotto, think the guy is all class and I am a huge fan. And I also wish him the best. Which is exactly why I don't care to see Cotto fight Golovkin. Maybe if he were still young and relatively unpunished. But he's just not and I have no illusions despite being a huge fan.
I'd like to see how Cotto would handle a real, powerful and healthy MW..........I just don't want it to be Golovkin.
The best path for him to finish his career are with fellow smaller guys moving up. Floyd and Canelo will fight him much more tactically and they are bigger $$ fights for him at this point by far......they also come with much less physical risk. He was a small 154 fighter, even smaller than Sergio..but he caught Sergio at the right time..........Golovkin is a bad choice in every possible way....
Golovkin vs Ward is the next big fight to determine the heir to who will be the best of this next generation of up and coming fighters.......that fight will define the new P4P king once the current Floyd/Pac/Cotto/Marquez era closes out.......But I don't see Golovkin getting any of those guys in the ring.
Maybe Canelo later?? But there's a reason Canelo is going to stay at 154 despite struggling with the weight. And that reason is NOT Cotto.
I think of Golovkin similarly to Trinidad riding that huge wave after Oscar and then running through 154 on a tear. Golvokin doesn't have a De La Hoya to launch from. Canelo could be it......but Trinidad would have survived without Oscar and flourished in the same way. Golovkin will too.
But after one fight at 160, Trinidad hit a wall when he ran into something he's never seen...a guy who has extreme skill and intelligence and could match him physically and blunt his offense......just like Trinidad vs Hopkins, Ward will play the role of stopper for Golovkin. I don't see him losing before that fight.
Despite what anyone may think of his opposition to date, Golovkin is for real. Your eyes should tell you that. Ward is the only guy 160-168 I see beating him at this stage.......and Ward will beat him. But Golovkin's handlers are smart enough to cash in first.......so give that another 18 mos before that fight gets close.
In the mean time, it will be interesting to see what Golovkin and Ward do until then. Ward has a problem with his promoters for good reason. And not many really want to fight him at 168 right now, including Golovkin.
People like to diss ward but Floyd was not a cross-over star and had trouble selling tickets until the De La Hoya fight. Ward is in a similar position without the dance partner Floyd had..........at least not yet. Maybe he can get Chavez Jr to sign??
Cotto could be beaten by boxers with range like Jacobs.....true MW that can hit hard but can fight backing up.........Cotto's a pressure fighter with a solid skill set but not in the same relentless way Golovkin is. And Cotto has a very vulnerable chin and a face that doesn't hold up well...........
As much as I'd love to see Cotto beat GGG and ride off into the sunset, that's just not going to happen. GGG is just bad for Cotto.........I don't see anything Cotto could exploit as much as I wish there were something.
But Cotto's proven himself as a warrior with tremendous heart and doesn't need GGG to prove anything. I'd hate to see GGG get his defining win over Cotto. Because it would be brutal and decisive. Cotto would gain props but wouldn't have the ability to recover as he did from his first two losses. Canelo, on the other hand, hasn't taken much punishment yet and eventually will go to MW.
At this stage in Cotto's career, I see Golovkin as a war he would likely not recover from physically despite his resilience, nor does he need it.......he's lucky enough to have resurrected his career after being beaten badly twice.....The Mayweather/Trout losses were not physically punishing in the same way Margarito and Pacquaio were. The Trout loss has been forgiven and he gave Mayweather a tough fight but he wasn't physically battered and beaten up in either of those fights.......with Golovkin he would be........
Cotto should take the best retirement plan with Canelo and Floyd, guys more his size. Let GGG take over when he finishes cashing out.......just don't let him cash out on Cotto...........
Cotto for all his guts and gifts is a very small MW. Golovkin is a much bigger, stronger MW and when he lands, guys don't hold up well. There are plenty of guys at 160 for him to beat on before he's ready for Ward.........but Cotto doesn't need to be one of them nor should he.........Comment
