Comments Thread For: Fernando Montiel Continues Transition to Featherweight

Fernando Montiel and Jesus Rios both made weight for their scheduled 10-round showdown, which takes place Saturday evening in Chiapas, Mexico.

Both fighters came in at the contracted limit of 127 lb.; the fight, which headlines on TV Azteca, is declared a featherweight bout, with a +/- 1 lb. allowance.

Montiel (51-4-2, 35KOs) ventures into featherweight waters for the second straight fight, as the 35-year old remains in search of a title in his fourth weight class. A former titlist at flyweight, super flyweight and bantamweight, Montiel saw mixed results come of his 122 lb. campaign, losing a 12-round decision to Vic Terrazas in Nov. '11, in his most notable fight at that weight. [Click Here To Read More]

Like Montiel, Broner has won sanctioning body world titles in three divisions. He's 6-1 in world title bouts. Montiel is 17-3. Broner is 4-1 against fellow world champions. Montiel is 11-4.

I suggest you peruse Montiel's record again. If you don't see any notable wins, you must not be very familiar with the lower weight classes and shouldn't be commenting on Montiel's accomplishments.

When was the word "great" part of the conversation? Wasn't the word you used "notable"?

Here are just some of the notable fighters he beat- Isidro Garcia, Jose "Carita" Lopez, the late Pedro Alcazar, Ivan "Choko" Hernandez, Martin Castillo, Alberto Rosas, and Hozumi Hasegawa, who was the consensus #1 bantamweight in the world at the time Montiel halted him.
