  • Comments Thread For: Esquiva Falcao Aims To Give Boxing a Boost in Brazil

In a country where sport is dominated by football (soccer), Esquiva Falcão (3-0, 1 KO) has the unenviable task of trying to win the attention of a public which when it does show interest in combat sports, leans to the world of MMA.

“I’m quite well recognised now in the Brazilian sports media, especially after the Olympics,” Falcão told BoxingScene.

“This is good for me and Brazilian boxing.

“There’s a lack of professional boxers in Brazil, but I think I’m here at the right moment to make Brazilian boxing more popular.”

Boxing is not a mainstream sport in Brazil for many reasons but the main problem is that we dont have a champion for some years or even a good contender. Almost all brazilians tend to only like a sport if a brazilian is doing fine at.

There was the great Eder Jofre (Sad story about him....since his wife passed way he is losing his fight against alzheimer pretty fast), Popo and thats about it.

I dont count in the one time featherweight champion Valdemir Pereira.

As for Esquiva....he and his family made an ass of themselves on tv by getting a new house for free and them being very ungrateful. It was pretty lame. And also his brother was DQ in his first fight as a pro.

All that being said...we do have some people that cares about boxing but is really only a small number.

As for myself i read about boxing on a daily baisis, try to watch almost all big events on tv (Here is different because i dont have to pay for each ppv as i only have to sing the sport channel and about everything is aired: hbo, showtime and euro events) and i am willing to watch the new Floyd (after Maidana) live...only have to convince my girlfriend.

I couldn't have said it any better.
