Comments Thread For: Omar Figueroa Training Without Joel Diaz For Estrada

The lightweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Omar 'Panterita' Figueroa, has decided to make a change in his camp for his second defense of the green belt, which takes place this August 16 at the StubHub Center in California. He faces mandatory challenger Daniel Estrada.

For the upcoming fight, Figueroa has decided not to train with coach Joel Diaz. Figueroa had no interest in going over to California for camp. Instead, he is training with his father, Omar Figueroa Sr. It is still a possibility that Diaz will work the corner on fight night.

This kid is from my hometown and everyone loves him here, but I don't see anything special in him. I don't think he takes boxing serious. I don't know him personally but I do associate myself with some of his handlers. From what i hear, boxing was never his first love. He wanted to play baseball and go to college but his dad pushed him towards boxing.

I've also ran into him at a burger joint at 3 am and he was visibly intoxicated. I love the city im from but there is no way he is going to get quality sparring here. Boxing is very vibrant but the talent is very low. Robert Garcia, also a Weslaco resident, who fights this Friday on ESPN2 vs Prescott, leaves to las vegas for this very reason. Omar not going to California for camp is just another example of his lack of dedication.

I wish the guy nothing but the best but I don't see him ever developing into anything other than a hype job bust. I felt he lost his last fight vs Jerry Belmontes. He should easily beat Estrada but I wouldn't be surprised if he struggles to beat him or if he is given a decision.

That sucks that a parent would push a kid towards doing something else. Why tho? Much better future in college and baseball. Baseball wasnt a guarantee cause it's hard to make it but at least he would've had a college education.

I didnt read the article but Ive seen some people picking Estrada and now this doesnt sound good. I never saw anything special in Figueroa either and he just got a gift decision his last fight.
