when he was in his prime, his reflexes were so good that he could do whatever he wanted with his chin. it wasn't getting hit anyway.

floyd mayweather had the best reflexes i've ever seen on any athlete when he was in his prime.

He knows what hes doing in there, their is a reason why in all his career that chin only been checked a handful of times.

However I saw a few times in the Maidana fight he left his chin in the air and I couldent help but think if a faster fighter like Khan would have tagged it.

i personally think he opens himself up at times as he moves away to get his opponents to look for the home run making their punches easier to avoid and counter.
He gets away with it when he does it because of speed, reflexes, and the muscle memory of the roll after the punch while stepping away.

larryx is correct, I use a philly shell variation myself more often than not and I depend on my shoulder and right hand and try and keep my chin tucked down but when throwing the straight right or a sweeping right hand (which I use often) my chin is exposed and tucking it further would sacrifice my awareness, it's a tradeoff, against a good counter puncher I have gotten rocked before, then it's time to adjust, but I rely on speed and reflexes in the ring, I don't like getting touched up, it will get me out of there quick, I only stay inside if I know I can win inside.

Mayweather is more defensive minded now, knows how to approach southpaws so you won't see him exchanging like that.

the guy is a product of great matchmaking, never faced a great pressure fighter, never faced a great mover, never faced a great fighter actually, how fortunate
Without his extreme athletic advantage and ability to control distance with his point guard quick feet, yes.

Although Mayweather is a bit elusive, he is more defensive than anything (a good blocker). He does not have not a Jones, Whitaker, Pep or even Toney (not entirely at least) type of defense, he is there to be hit, his skill is when it comes to blocking and shoulder rolling. I would say Mayweather's is Toney and Hopkins combined. People like to combine fighters and say 'wow imagine a fighter that was this fighter and that fighter combined'...well Floyd Mayweather Jr is as close to a mix of two fighters as we will ever see, I really think he has a lot of Mayweather Sr., Hopkins and Toney. Neither of them are actually "elusive", except, Toney, they use pure defense instead of reflexes. What reflexes does Hopkins use at 49? Lol he barely has any, he uses fundamentally sound blocking, countering and footwork.

imagine if Maidana had his MX gloves and really put his hips into this shot instead of just an arm punch, Floyd is flawed too, dude does leave his chin up in the air when throwing shots, no wonder he rarely throws combos and just pot shots because when he does throw combos his accuracy goes down low and he gets hit more, so he gives the illusion, its all a facade if you really analyze why he is so accurate. This why he fights slow fighters or flat foot guys.

He got wobbled by an arm punch but look how he leaves his chin up

Do you think Amir Khan can give Mayweather trouble? Or even beat him?

You guys are a bunch of crazy, obsessed men.... Floyd often hangs his chin out when he is in range but his opponent isn't. One of (if not the) best attributes Floyd has is distance and a freakish reach. He hangs his chin out as a target to open his opponent up and tags you when you're open. Out of how ever many rounds Floyd has been in, how many times has he been caught whilst throwing a lead right hand? Not a lot is the answer. Floyd uses a variation of punches to keep you guessing, keep you busy and distracted. His overall game allows him to throw shots and not get hit whilst throwing.... And yeah of course guys.... Floyd isn't a perfect boxer... nobody is.... but he is pretty damn close.
Saying things like "if Floyd wasn't as fast...." "if Floyd didn't do this...." is just laughable.... you guys are having wet dreams imagining Floyd being something he isn't and using that to pretend he isn't as good as he is. Well Floyd is that fast and Floyd does have those reflexes and Floyd does have a solid chin and Floyd does see punches coming most of the time.... so stop with the wishful thinking crap and give the man his due instead of trying to nitpick and fantasize about him being slow and getting chinned.
Ali didn't have perfect technique... he use to pull his head straight back to avoid shots and he was open for left hooks (as evidenced by Cooper and Frazier) but are we going to say "if Ali had a weak chin..." "if Ali was slow....". You have to take a boxers attributes into account, technique gets you so far.... but it is the things you can do that others can't that sets you aside from the rest.
