How common is it for a fighter to age over night?

Floyd looked phenomenal against Canelo and then against Maidana he looked comparatively woeful.

Are there any instances where a fighter who is getting up in years has a great performance followed by looking like poop?

It is very common, most people age at least 8 hours overnight.

Mayweather's not the best example here, considering Canelo and Maidana fought two completely different fights.

Fact is, many fighters over the age of 30 age over night, one fight they can look spectacular and then the next ****, they're gone.

When a great fighter gives a spectacular performance late in his career, you can almost bet that he won't look the same after.

There's some truth to this. Look at Mosley v Margarito.

Great fighters often have one last great performance in them. The problem is that most fighters don't know when the last one was and think there's always another one and it never comes.

Maybe we're looking at that with Floyd, who knows? The man is getting close to 40. I've no doubt he could go on a few more years with the right fight selection but there comes a time when fighters who couldn't lace your gloves at your best are making you look old and start beating you.

You would have to assume Mayweather is smart enough in the boxing sense to know when he's done, what with him being safety first and his 0 being his marketing angle. So maybe he feels he has enough in the tank to fight on for now.

I believe this next fight will give us an idea of where he is at right now.

Physically you can only age one day at a time and it would be impossible to get old over night. If Mayweather had a bigger drop in performance than would be expected between the Canelo fight and the Maidana fight eight months later then it would be partly due to other things beside natural aging. I agree Mayweather looked like a much better fighter against Canelo than he did against Maidana. Mayeather was 8 months further past his prime so that would cause him to fight at a slightly lower level. Other factors could be that Maidana had a more difficult style for Floyd to deal with. Mayweather may not have had as good of training camp as he did for Canelo. Mayweather could have had something going on in his life that took his focus off of training and fighting. The most common cause for a fighter appearing to get old over night would just be a big loss of the desire to train and fight. After so many years of fighting they just get mentally burned out.

Cotto fans don't want to hear that.

I can't even try to be funny now.

It's not so much aging overnight as finally fighting someone who can take advantage of that fighter declining for a while. Floyd looked great against Alvarez because he was fighting someone who stood in front of him and boxed. Maidana was a harder style to deal with.

Cotto is still relatively young at 33. And rejuvenated. But yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't look as hot going forward although, as stated, he's still somewhat young.
