Chicago media and fight fans alike all turned out Wednesday in mass for the third stop of the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Ricardo Mayorga press junket titled "Danger Zone". Hacienda Tecalitlan restaurant on Ashland Ave. in Chicago was the hosting site for the press conference being promoted by Don King.
Promoter Don King and Mayorga were delayed due to airport delays, so Oscar's camp took the podium and started off the press conference which by that time was now over an hour late. As soon as King and Mayorga arrived, pandemonium and fireworks began. King took the microphone and went into an outrageous and entertaining diatribe to promote the fight using his usual shtick of flag waving and words that only exist in the the Don King dictionary.
King said because he has now grown benevolent and Mayorga was going to do De La Hoya a favor. After this fight, Oscar can retire from boxing and focus all his energies on being CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. King even went so far as to say that Oscar would most likely become the greatest promoter since, well, Don King!
At the end of King's rant, he handed the microphone to Mayorga who immediately began to stare down, insult, denigrate, and threaten De La Hoya in Spanish, accusing Oscar of taking a dive in his KO loss to Bernard Hopkins and saying the Golden Boy disrespected him. During the venom-filled throw down, Mayorga quickly reached over and open hand slapped Oscar to the back of the head, starting a massive melee of pushing, shoving and yelling.
When order returned somewhat, Oscar took his turn at the microphone to tell Mayorga exactly what he thought of him and what he planned on doing to him come May 6th. All the while with Mayorga yelling behind him and making foul gestures.
At the end of Oscar's brief speech, he promptly stood from the table and left the stage, making his way for his waiting limo.
As this is the third wild outrageous press conference in two days, some would assume that Mayorgas antics and actions were calculated by King and Oscar to hype the fight and bolster PPV sales (which King is aiming for an unheard of 2 million buys).
However, it did not appear that De La Hoya was enjoying the banter. He looked genuinely furious and filled with hatred for the disrespect shown by Mayorga.
