  • Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Bounces Back With Decision Over Oquendo

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Former three division world champion Abner Mares (27-1-1, 14KOs) returned to the ring after nearly a year off, and won a ten round unanimous decision over Jonathan Oquendo (24-4, 16KOs). The scores were 96-94, 98-92, 98-92. The fight was Mares' first since the knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez from last August, and his first under new trainer Virgil Hunter.

Mares had the edge in the early going. Oquendo opened up in the fourth round, landing good shots to the head of Mares and bad cut opened up around the left eye of Mares after an accidental clash of heads. The fight was grueling and mostly fought on the inside with neither guy gaining a significant advantage.

Mares isn't a hype job. He just got hit with the perfect power hook on the perfect spot. Hype jobs don't get passed champs like Ponce DeLeon, Raging Bull Darchinyan , King Kong Agbeko, Chemito Moreno. Do u know who those guys are? Good to see him back. Let's get the Gonzalez rematch.

After a brutal KO loss and 11 months off he looked great. He started off slow but once he shook off that ring rust and tasted adversity with the cut, he got busy. I liked how he was using his jab and setting up combinations and would land some powerful counters on Oquendo. He does seem to clinch more but I like the fact that for the most part, even when tangled, he remains aggressive and continues throwing regardless of which position he is in. It looks like he is reverting to his boxing roots and that's a good sign.

Sidenote: I would kill to see Abner Mares vs Gary Russel JR. I remember it was being scheduled to go down but it fell through and GR Jr ended up sparring TBA at the time. Now that Gary saw his potential firsthand and the fact that he can hang with the big boys, I'm hoping the fight can actually get made so we could all get a real treat.

It was a boring fight fight! Mares DID NOT show any improvement & should serously consider going back with any of his past trainers. Oquendo is NOTHING SPECIAL he was dropped 5 times in 3 rounds by Juanma & dropped twice by "Papito" Vazquez in both of his KO losses & niether Juanma nor Vazquez are in the same league as Mares. I have NO idea what people see in Virgil Hunter, cause ever since Angulo went with him he's gotten KO'd twice, Khan hasn't shown anything special sine training with Hunter & Hunter had a special plan for Mike Dallas against Matthysse & got annihilated in 1 round & what Hunter has done with Ward is because Ward is a gifted fighter with natural talent, not because Hunter has done anything special with Ward. Ward could train with anybody & still be just as good or better.
