Comments Thread For: Photos: Barthelemy Grabs IBF Gold in Mendez Rematch

Rances Barthelemy is the new IBF super-featherweight champion after a unanimous points win over Argenis Mendez in Miami. Bathelemy improved his record to 20-0 after all three judges scored the fight 115-111 in favour of the Cuban.

Barthelemy had beaten Mendez back in January via a second round stoppage only for the decision to be changed to a "no contest" after replays confirmed the fight-ending combination had come after the bell. There was no such controversy this time, although the margin of victory could have been greater for Barthelemy after he was deducted points in the ninth and 10th rounds for low blows.

Way to go, Rances! I was happy to be present when another one of my peeps won another world title.

That's five Cuban world champions, six if you count Kid Chocolate.

        Dey only amateurs doe!

50 or so Cuban boxers fighting pro worldwide, and five are world champs. Approximately 10%. Amazing. It'll be six the moment Gamboa has a title shot at 130. You know what that does? It inspires other Cubans to defect, and Cuban-Americans to take up the sport, just like Mexicans and Puerto Ricans have been inspired by their athletes.

Watch out, 'cause there's more Cubano champeens a comin', son!

It's always been my argument man. We have very few standouts in a endless crowd of quality boxers. I hope this ripple effect continues and we see more talent come our way.

Speaking of talent, you remember JSFD telling us Ramon Luis was DQ'd in his pro debut? Was that overturned? I just checked boxrec and it has him up 1-0. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hum...2502&cat=boxer
