Comments Thread For: Erik Morales To Help Train Jorge Paez Jr.

In a strange twist of fate, former four division world champion Erik Morales will help train welterweight contender Jorge Paez Jr. (37-5-1, 22KOs) for his ring return later in this year.

Morales was scheduled to face Paez on March 22 in Monterrey. He suffered a hand injury as the fight drew close and former champion Vivian Harris stepped in as a late replacement. In a fight most believed would be a mismatch, Harris pulled off a shocking upset with a ten round majority decision. The loss snapped a ten fight win streak.

It is good if Morales thinks he can help younger boxers to improve. Maybe with the new activity this time Erik is totally retired and won't do anymore like Jorge Arce who has retired so many times but after few weeks Jorge is back and some how he gets to fight for another title.

Interesting. Morales is helping train Paez Jr and Marquez will be in Estrada's corner in his upcoming fight. It's nice to see 2 Mexican greats begin to transition to the corner work. Their experience and first hand take of the sport will provide fighters with a lot of insight as well as proper instructions on what to do. Add the fact that they will be extra motivated to perform well in front of 2 greats and that's a recipe for a good outcome. It's nice to see the older generation is beginning to transfer their wisdom down to the younger fighters. This is a step in the right direction for both JMM and EM, and perhaps a glimpse of Mexico's bright boxing future.

Glad to see Morales is still in the sport but doing something other than fighting. It is good to see that he is making a contribution to the sport as a trainer. I hope he succeeds.
