Comments Thread For: Canelo Alvarez Assumes Control of His Career

By Jake Donovan - Even though he’s still less than a year removed from his loss to Floyd Mayweather, former 154 lb. titlist Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is still at a point in his career where he can call the shots. When it was announced that the Mexican superstar would return to fight three times in 2014 and all on pay-per-view, the bare minimum requirement was that he find opponents notable enough to sell the events.

With three planned appearances on the year, it wasn’t expected for any of Alvarez’ opponents to pose a major threat. Alfredo Angulo fit that mold to a tee – still a notable enough name to convince the sport’s hardcore fan base to pay attention, but flawed enough to where Alvarez would not only win but look spectacular doing so.

Erislandy Lara does not come close to fitting the prototype for the expected level of opposition to face Alvarez over this period. Yet there stands one of the best 154 lb. fighters in the world, preparing for a 12-round battle with one of the sport’s biggest draws this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada (Saturday, SHO PPV, 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT).

The move is a major risk not only for Alvarez, but for Golden Boy Promotions, who continues to undergo a major facelift in the wake of key personnel departures in recent weeks. Alvarez is one of the few notable fighters confirmed to be under contract with Golden Boy, which means a loss by boxing’s most famous active redhead could prove crippling to the company. If only Thurman was bigger...he'll find a "name" but some1 safe, Lara's no puncher, & his "protected" career goes on...I assume he tries to keep all going w/the hope of gettting Floyd, again...HBO needs 2b more demanding on his opponents...this could, style wise, a boring bout...

I'll give Canelo his due. Never expected him to get in the ring with Trout or Lara, especially Lara after what Floyd just did to him but the man has heart. I hope he does keep up this trend and maybe he'll make a fan of me.

Still want to see Canelo - Kirkland so bad. That'd be a straight up war yo!

Alvarez says he wants the toughest fights, that's why he facing Lara. The truth is, Lara kept calling him out, & Canelo got miffed. It should be an exciting fight, but no belt is on the line, due to a catch weight. Yet, it is on PPV. So Is Canelo such a superstar, that he will only do PPV fights now? If so, when the heck did he become a superstar, and against whom? Was it in the loss to Mayweather, where he looked like a nervous, slow kid, who could barely land a punch? Or was it to Angulo, who fought like a punching bag with arms? Perhaps it was after he beat Austin Trout, who was widely unkown until a couple of years ago? Other than that, there are the under-sized and washed-up big names he beat. So, PPV only for Canelo??

But why is he the 3rd biggest draw in the sport? I like the kid, but let him beat a top fighter in a tough fight before he's crowned a PPV king!

The reason the fight with Mayweather was so huge is because there's a lot of people who want to see FLoyd lose his "0". The end result showed Alvarez wasn't ready for that fight.

Third biggest draw in the sport? That is the equivalent of calling Lomachenko a top 5 P$P fighter. That is wishful thinking on your part. Alvarez has one PPV fight that did not sell as well as Cotto's last fight or Chavez's only PPV fight, so how the hell can he be the third biggest draw in boxing. The truth is he is a very popular guy who has done nothing to earn his popularity. He will be exposed as he continues to fight quality fighters.

How is that even comparable?? One is measured by numbers/Facts while the other relies on opinion and is pretty much subjective.

Lomachenko isn't anywhere near a top 10 p4p while Alvarez based on numbers alone is easily top 5 in revenue. I don't get why that rubs people the wrong way.

Lol floyd has cracked the 1 million ppv sales multiple times. The top 3 grossing fights of all times involved floyd. Perhaps you should give canelo time to grow his brand before you anoint him ppv king.
