  • Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Still Wants Revenge on Jhonny Gonzalez

Former three division world champion Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) has not forgotten about his rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 47KOs). Last August, Mares was shockingly stopped by Gonzalez in the first round.

Mares then exercised a rematch clause, but later withdrew from a planned February rematch in Los Angeles. He claimed to have suffered a rib injury, which Gonzalez and his camp never believed.

"Well, I did suffer a brief injury in Mexico City. I was training for that fight for February, a rematch against Jhonny Gonzalez and then after that we just didn't agree with dates pretty much. That was the whole case of the fight not happening," Mares said.

"He wanted to take some time off. I was not going to give any advantages, so I decided not to take the fight any time soon and he didn't want to wait. So, with that said, I needed more time for myself to recover. I'm just focused on this fight, but later on in the future it's possible again."

"This is a guy who took my undefeated record. He did take a lot from me that night. I'm not saying physically, because it happened so fast, less than a round. So, thank God, physically, I wasn't damaged that much, but naturally he did as far as taking my undefeated record, so believe me, I do want my rematch, I want my revenge. But that will come within time."
So many damn contradictions in 1 statement!... I give up fk it he obviously doesn't want Gonzales best of luck in his future endeavors.

I'm ok with this tune-up fight against Oquendo. Mares has faced a murderous row since that bantamweight tournament.

But he should fight Johnny soon after he gets this victory.

DannYankee09, the boxing scene interview analysis expert, . People f**k up translations you know. Or it could be a typo, they make a lot of those on here.

Mares is one of my favorites, but man am I glad he got f**ked up. And he doesn't want anything to do with Gonzalez ever again, .

It's a translation error doe? Thats a new one cong****. He should want to beat Gonzales **** he still telling us he does like before the rib injury he had everyone hyped -___- then nada. The second fight could very well play out differently. I dont want to wait 4 years damit

2 times he got out of a fight because of a "rib injury".
That damn rib must be broken all the time.

He doesnt want it, and he says "In time the fight will happen".

When Jhonny is like 39 years old he'll have his revenge.

The rematch will come in time and I think Abner Mares will come better prepared and will win the fight. He's never ducked anyone and always takes on the most difficult fights even now that he's not a champion and is coming back from a year long layoff he's still taking on a solid challenge.

Typical Cuban hating on a Mexican warrior. You're just jealous Rigo will never be the star Mares is.
