Comments Thread For: Photo: Oquendo on The Plane, Back in With Chagaev

In a whirlwind day, Fres Oquendo is officially back in the fight and has boarded a plane in Chicago. Oquendo is on his way to Grozny to face former champion Ruslan Chagaev for the vacant WBA 'regular' heavyweight title. Earlier today, the promoters in Grozny said Oquendo has pulled out due to a passport issue and they were about to replace him with Alexander Petkovic (49-4-4, 27KOs), which would have been a non-title fight.

Weird fiasco... Oquendo took the fight without his promoter's approval (supposedly), they were trying to cancel the fight, then they reached an agreement, then they had some passport issues, found a replacement but now he boarded the plane doe.

I think Oquendo needs a paycheck and his team didn't think he was ready for this fight so they tried to cancel it. We'll see.

Is the WBA going off there 2002 rankings sanctioning Oquendo? Sorry WBA, but look at his boxrec, his ranking and this match for title is a farce!

oquendo beat rossy & held the WBA federlatin & NABA title to get top 5 WBA ranking. I believe chagaev holds 2 WBA regional belts also putting him near the top following the pudar win. briggs just won the NABA belt (oquendo vacated)so he will be in the top 10 when the rankings are updated...fres needs to leave roy jones' square ring promotion as he doesn't get him fights...
