"Alien" Hopkins vs "Krusher" Kovalev Post fight Discussion thread

"I think Hopkins will go on until this next fight against Kovalev - and then that will be his last fight. I think Hopkins sees something in Kovalev that makes him fancy it and thinks he can win, but I just can't see it happening for him. Hopkins has recently beaten the likes of Tavoris Cloud, Karo Murat and Beibut Shumenov but they are not in the same league as Kovalev, who is part of a new breed of fighter. Hopkins is the old breed of fighter.

You can put Kovalev in the same bracket as Gennady Golovkin, who is blowing everyone away at middleweight, and an up-and-coming Russian light-heavyweight called Artur Beterbiev. Those three, I feel, are a new, different breed of fighter and the ones that are standing out from the rest at the moment. They are well-schooled fighters, they have had a great background in Russian amateur boxing and they have real power."

"Golovkin and Kovalev have to be in the top ten pound-for-pound ratings and they are getting better. I think Kovalev will take over the light-heavyweight division.

I've felt Kovalev's power and it is something else. He has incredible punching power, throws punches correctly and has great technique. I think Hopkins will try and mess Kovalev about for a few rounds but once Kovalev starts landing his punches cleanly, which he might find difficult to do at first, he will capitalise and finish him."

Kovalev is very different to the stereotypical Eastern Bloc fighter, very different to a guy like Golovkin for example. He's much more dynamic and much busier. First time I saw him I thought he was the closest thing there is to a Manny Pacquiao in the heavier weight-classes. Not as good obviously, but similar in many respects.

He's definitely not a 'straight-up', straightforward fighter. He's a lot more varied than the upright, 1-2 dependent stereotype.

He's offense. Everything about him is offense. It's incredibly fun to watch. He throws everything from any range and in combination.

The other day, my 53-year-old uncle watched the 24/7 for this fight.

"Who do you think is gonna win?" I asked.

"The brother," he said.

By "brother" he means black guy.

I think he's right.

If you're not black, black fighters are tough to handle. Of course black fighters beat black fighters.

For example, Paulie Malignaggi vs Shawn Porter; Fernando Vargas vs Felix Trinidad; Oscar De La Hoya vs Shane Mosley etc.

Note that neither Marcos Maidana nor Lucas Matthysse could knock out any top black fighter -- i.e., Devon Alexander, Floyd Mayweather, Chop Chop Corely, Adrien Broner.

Just look at James Toney, a former middleweight who took bombs from a hard-punching heavyweight and didn't go anywhere.

Notice how when Kovalev fought a black fighter it took him longer to get the KO? That is, Darnell Boone first fight and Cedric Agnew.

There's something about black fighters that makes them inherently physically tougher, stronger, faster, more fast twitch. I totally understand why some posters on NSB and members of the YTBC point out that Mayweather doesn't fight black fighters. Devon Alexander knows what's up.

Take a look at Muhammad Ali... During his last fights, he clearly had the early stages of Parkinson's disease and yet he still didn't get knocked out. Truly amazing yet also very, very tragic.
