Comments Thread For: McGuigan: Time For Ricky Burns To Hang Up The Gloves

British legend Barry McGuigan has urged former world champion Ricky Burns (36-4-1, 11KOs) to retire from boxing. Last Friday in Glasgow, the 31-year-old boxer suffered his second consecutive loss, via a split decision, to unknown lightweight contender Dejan Zlaticanin. Even before that defeat, and the loss earlier this year to Terence Crawford, Burns struggled badly and nearly saw defeat against Raymundo Beltran and Jose Gonzalez.

I agree with Barry. Big fan of Ricky as a boxer and a person, but he hasn't been the same since the Beltran fight. I don't think he has got past that broken jaw mentally as he seems terrified when he gets hit.

Gonzalez ruined Burns. Beltran finished him.

Alex Arthur ruined Burns. Carl Johanneson finished him.

That Z guy is not a bad fighter, undefeated and all, so the quality of opponent is no shame. The fact is, the home field advantage is no longer enough for Burn. He counted on it enough to lure a title there, but now it's turning into scrutiny and pressure. Take a vacation, then get a ticket to hollywood, work out at the wild card, fight a rust remover in Vegas, then decide on the future. Better late than never.

did burns not realise that guy was throwing that over hand left without looking, all burns had to do was keep his right hand up, he could have won with jabs and clinching.
