After the first four rounds of the fight, the tension was building as Olympic gold medal winner Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16KOs) was able to outland and outbox WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford (24-0, 17KOs).

The entire contest changed, to the delight of the near 11,000 fans at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, when Crawford dropped Gamboa in the fifth round. Crawford would drop Gamboa again in the eight and two more times in the ninth for the TKO win.

Gamboa didn't fade. He got the hell knocked outta him in the 5th and never really recovered. Honestly, I wouldn't have objected had it been stopped in the 5th. And I thought he was gonna get stopped in the 6th cause his legs were gone. He showed a lotta heart. But once it was established that he couldn't hurt Crawford and Crawford could hurt him, it was over. TC really didn't even outbox him. He just opened up and exchanged with Gamboa. And more times than not they were both landing good shots. TC would walk through Gamboa's. Gamboa would end up on the corner of Michael Sam Blvd and Orlando Cruz Way. That was the difference in the fight.

When I say Gamboa "couldn't hurt him." I'm talking about the mentality that TC fought with. TC was tentative the first 2-3rds. He was basically trying to sit back and counter. But Gamboa's speed was giving him fits. I saw a change in TC's demeanor in the 4th. He had basically lost respect for Gamboa's power and started to walk him down and exchange with him. And of course, the next round Gamboa walked into the hook that for the most part ended the fight. Yes, TC was buzzed. But that was due to being careless. Which makes sense because he had walked through Gamboa's big shots all night.

Can't hold it against a guy for having second thoughts about fighting a bigger guy. Bernard Hopkins did pretty close to the same thing a couple years back with his proposed fight with James Toney after Toney beat Jirrov in that classic to win the cruiserweight title.

everyone should thank Gamboa for making the fight and creating the excitement. We all know Crawford will need aggressive opponents to look good or else he will be content with boxing and winning
