Comments Thread For: Matt Korobov Drops, Outpoints Jose Uzcategui

The concept behind HBO showcasing unbeaten middleweight Matt Korobov was to build him up as a potential future opponent for red-hot middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin.

That much was evident throughout the broadcast, as their commentary failed to match the lack of action that took place for much of Korobov's 10-round points win over Jose Uzcategui.

The bout served as the televised chief support to the lightweight title fight between Terence Crawford and Yuriorkis Gamboa at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska. [Click Here To Read More]

I don't remember heavyweights as slow as these two middleweights. No speed or consistency.

        I had it 97-91 Korobov.

He showed very solid skills at times, and contrary to the post above I thought he speed was fine, but throughout many of the rounds it looked like he just didn't give a ****k.

Yes, he looked fine but doesn't seem to have the enthusiasm he had for boxing when he first turned pro.

He was in with an undefeated, strong, determined opponent. It was a very good win for Korobov.

Always been the problem with Mattvey - for all his skill and technique he just doesn't have the finishing instinct that'll make him a fan favourite.

In a number of his fights I've seen the same thing (well- at least in the Brewer fight) he'll be winning the rounds, put his guy down... and then take his foot off the gas.

I had thought he had been trying a bit harder to impress - evidenced by the Duran and Edwards fights where he let his fists go a bit more.

It could be that nearly getting KOd while opening up against Edwards made him overly cautious against a known ****er like Bolivita, but it just ain't a good look for someone of Mattveys calibre.

Still - a good win finally establishing him as a top contender (and breaking him into Boxrecs top 10 after a mere 6 years) for the WBO strap - much good it'll do him unless the WBO makes him a mando.

I continue to regard Mattvey as one of the best boxers in the division, but he won't get away with lletting guys off the hook or taking rounds off at top 10 level.

I'm not sure whether it was disinterest, lack of enthusiasm, or just poor conditioning. It looked like by the 4th round he was already fighting with his mouth wide open sucking for air. Not a good recipe for success against the body blows of a fighter like GGG.

Korobov is a solid technician not overly impressive but good enough to hang or beat anyone not named Golovkin.

There have been rumors of stamina issues which could explain the cautious approach he tends to take.

Terrible fight. Can't even believe I watched it.

Korobov is ****. He's what? 31 and been a pro for 6 years but he's still fighting 10 rounders against bums. He'll never do **** in the pros.

Korobov doesnt wanna fight anymore, he has no drive.

He had a 23 year old, feather fisted opponent in front of him, making his HBO debut, he should have easily sparked him out
