While many may be skeptical, at least these meetings are ACTUALLY taking place and they are discussion some useful topics.

I was hoping it wasn't going to be some pointless meeting about belt designs.

Ive always said it. F these promoters. The sanctioning bodies should be the ones making the fights mandatory or strip them of their belts. floyd vs pac at 147, or floyd ducks him and gets stripped of his belt.

So what happens after the tournament and the champ is gone? Do the belts just redivide? They can't just continue to wait for fresh champions for a tournament. They need to consistently match champions against other champions.

You don't deserve to be called "champ" in your weight division if other guys are walking around the planet getting called "champ" in your same weight division.

The wbo were invited to the meeting but declined for whatever reason

The WBO has become recognised as a legitimate sanctioning body over the years and it's current list of champions are comparable overall in quality with those of any of the other ABCs:

                Wlad
                Huck
                Kovalev
                Abraham
                Quillin
                Andrade
                Pac
                Algieri
                Crawford
                Mikey Garcia
                Loma
                Rigo
                Tomoki Kameda
                Narvaez
                Estrada
                Nietes
                F. Rodriguez Jr

It would seem a shame if we were to get 'unified' champs excluding some of these great talents (curiously - though probably co-incidentally TR / HBO fighters are fairly heavily represented amongst the WBO titlists).
The the wbo were invited but declined the invitation, pity because a unified champion is every fans dream

They might have a unified belt, whilst keeping their current world titles. The first champ would be the winner of the tournament and would then vacate the other world titles. The holder of the unified title would have to defend his title against the belt holders.

If this is true this is great news for boxing! There can only be one true champion in each weight class. Exciting times ahead

Also whilst I agree in principal that the highest paid superstars can't be made to fight each other, it's a step in the right direction. Besides, todays top earners like Floyd, Manny, Wlad, Cotto even Froch will be pretty much out of the picture by the time these plans come to fruition and if the idea of having unified Champs can be re-established as normal for the next gneration it will be a huge improvement.

Though as you say the WBO need to be involved in this process.
Well yeah, it is a step in the right direction and as soon as the Floyd hype is over and he retires, there won't be another fighter who carries so much financial clout and I think if these organisations are willing to truly work together, we could have better divisions, better fights and true champions. But it will most likely happen around 2020 or after.

It's a long way to go but the first steps need to be taken now.
