  • Comments Thread For: WBC, IBF, WBA Agree on Topics, Set Second Meeting

During Monday's meeting between the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF), their leaders reached agreements to benefit the sport.

At the meeting, which was held in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico - Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar (WBC), Gilberto Jesus Mendoza (WBA) and Darryl Peoples (IBF) met face to face.

Among the agreements reached, is that a tournament is expected to find a single division world champion, in order for fans to recognize a single champion by 2016.

The most obv single division champion would be Wlad, no cold war/promotional issues, has all the other belts and also a big money fight. Just let him at Stiverne/Wilder winner.

Guess they figure Mayweather will be retired by 2016.. if they did want a single division champ right now it'd be Floyd @ 147 & 154 Garcia @ 140 They both unified Champs

This is very important and significant news - aiming to have a unified champion in each division by 2016 is very ambitious but also great for the sport - what I am curious about is why the WBO are not a part of these talks.

The WBO has become recognised as a legitimate sanctioning body over the years and it's current list of champions are comparable overall in quality with those of any of the other ABCs:

        Wlad
        Huck
        Kovalev
        Abraham
        Quillin
        Andrade
        Pac
        Algieri
        Crawford
        Mikey Garcia
        Loma
        Rigo
        Tomoki Kameda
        Narvaez
        Estrada
        Nietes
        F. Rodriguez Jr

It would seem a shame if we were to get 'unified' champs excluding some of these great talents (curiously - though probably co-incidentally TR / HBO fighters are fairly heavily represented amongst the WBO titlists).

forget the IBO, where's the WBO in all of this?

Btw single division champs just aren't possible when you have fighters not responding to governing bodies, Floyd won't fight guys that are a threat, Stiverne will hold onto the WBC belt for a couple years fighting the has-beens club etc etc etc

With GB and TR on good terms and the major belts trying to unify, boxing could enter a new golden age

too bad none of that stuff will ever happen, ever

Whoops - posted on this above - cept I put down IBO instad of WBO. I think a little EDIT might be necessary.

Also whilst I agree in principal that the highest paid superstars can't be made to fight each other, it's a step in the right direction. Besides, todays top earners like Floyd, Manny, Wlad, Cotto even Froch will be pretty much out of the picture by the time these plans come to fruition and if the idea of having unified Champs can be re-established as normal for the next gneration it will be a huge improvement.

Though as you say the WBO need to be involved in this process.

xcellent move by Sulaiman 2 make this happen, should make boxing better/stronger w/standardized rules...the 3 bodies don't need the wbo & the corrupt Valcarcel...be nice if they could agree on a limit how much a fighter rehydrates after weigh in so as 1 doesn't have an overwhelming weight advantage...
